Deadpool

A fun little trick is to put your name followed by "was killed by" in Google to see how your going to die. My highlights:

"... was killed by wraiths."

"... was killed by an American sniper."

"... was killed by a rock thrown through a window of a store or saloon at Caledonia."

Another little trick is to put "... needs." The first to pop up for me was:

"... needs a girlfriend."

Grrr....damn you Google.

I took a break before lunch and ran over to Rineharts. I picked this one up. It'd only come out four days before. Then I went back to my car and listened to it and passed out. Start => A

I was struggling to sleep last night, lying in bed thinking about where I bought certain CDs. Don't know why exactly, but I was. I think I remember where I bought most CDs I currently own, dating back to 1993 when I got my first one. Sounds like a fun experiment. I'll post everything I own to see if I can remember. This is going to take a long time so I'll do it in pieces. Here goes:

Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker

Ryan Adams - Gold

Reborn

I'm in the middle of another music-buying frenzy. I've picked up some really good stuff this week. I ordered Sufjan Stevens' A Sun Came! to polish off my Sufjan collection. I also ordered up the whole catalog from Phosphorescent (just received The Weight of Flight today, the first I've received).

Tuesday I found a couple of great used CDs. I finally picked up the New Pornographers' Electric Version, something I'm very embarrassed that I hadn't bought yet. I also was thinking the night before that I would like to get into Great Lake Swimmers, then was very happy to find their Bodies and Minds used.

The real gem out of everything was Tuesday's best new release:

Loose Fur - Born Again in the USA

Fantastic stuff! I expected no less. Their first album was brilliant and this one is even better. It's definitely not like their first. It was an experiment in chaotic beauty, a noisy quiet album. This one is a little more straight-forward rock. "Hey Chicken" almost sounds like A.M.-era Wilco.....almost. Then followed by the almost Belle & Sebastian-esque "The Ruling Class".....almost. There is only one long noise orgy song in "Wreckroom," but it really wouldn't sound out of place on A Ghost is Born.

Damn, damn good stuff here. A little hard to compare to their first disc, so I can't really say which one is better. I still wouldn't put Loose Fur on the same level as Wilco, but it is more than enough to keep me satisfied between Wilco albums. Way more than enough.

Formatting

Big scare last night, but I've since recovered. I know I've had some virus and spyware problems on my computer the last couple of months, but I've kept them at bay for the most part. Last night, though, I was cleaning up some stuff on the harddrive when my anti-virus went ballistic. No matter what I did, I couldn't get rid of the infected file.

I finally decided to cut my losses and format the harddrive. Painful decision, but it had to be done. I've spent the last six hours working on getting back to full-speed and I'm mostly there. Okay, that a lie. I did fit in a trip to the record store in there too. Hey it's payday, and it's a release day for a sweet new album. I'll post about that tomorrow, likely.

Man, my computer is running like a dream right now. I love it. I've formatted it one other time, but that was when it was still fairly new (two years ago). It sucks to start all over; but if you're careful about backing things up, it's a huge improvement.

Back to reinstalling shit.

Mars Hill

Speaking of crappy reasons to currently be an Iowan....

Mars Hill Church burned down last week. Mars Hill Church is located basically in the middle of nowhere, near Floris, Iowa. It was Iowa's oldest still-standing church.
The church is also located almost right next door to my uncle's farm. I spent a lot of time in this area growing up.

It's been a little over a year since I've been there, but I remember it all very vividly. So eerily quiet. It's one of those places you really get a feel that you are truly in the middle of nowhere.

It was also a place of many of my fears as a child. The church has had a pretty seedy past, all of which is pretty common knowledge to those that know of its existence. It really is a pretty creepy area, but it's beautiful and quiet.

I know Amanda can vouch for this as well, but anybody that has spent any time in this area has their fair share of creepy tales. I've heard plenty of stories of weird creatures in the nearby woods, red lights stalking people at night, gunshot sounds in the night, voices and crying coming from the trees. Strange stuff.

When I heard about the fire, I was really hoping that it was of natural cause. Knowing the history of the place, however, I knew that it had to have been arson. It's a shame. I'll miss the place.

Busted

Man, I was so into this tournament. The two schools I went to (Kent State and UW-Milwaukee) were in. Plus my favorite school (Iowa) won the Big Ten. Things were looking so great.

Yesterday couldn't get much better. My bracket was just impeccable. UW-Milwaukee won (yeah, I picked it). Things were perfect.....

.....then today happened.

My bracket has been devastated. Kent State lost (um, I actually didn't pick them). The worst though was seeing Iowa lose. That was just agonizing. I didn't get to see any of the game. Then with ten seconds left, the station flipped over to the game. All I got to see was my team lose, then it flipped right back. Gee, thanks. And I work at this place?

Almost immediately after the game my phone started ringing. I was expecting it to be someone to rub it in. I was still in shock, so I was tempted not to answer. I did, however. It was my parents. They were flying into College Station, Texas, and wanted to know how the Hawkeyes were doing.

That sucks.

Broken News

I've never really hidden my displeasure in ESPN. Usually it involves that whole "East Coast bias" thing. I've tamed on that a bit though now that I actually live on the East Coast.

The thing that really bugs me is on ESPNews. Everything seems to be "breaking news" on there. I mean, EVERYTHING is breaking news. Not that they go into any kind of special news coverage, they just flash breaking news on the bottom of the screen. Plus they'll do that for the same story for twelve hours or so.

I saw a nice little example of this tonight:

Hmm, okay? Does anybody really notice this stuff anymore or are we all desensitized. Maybe they just expect any dumbass to come wandering into their network, see something shiny and stay around.

I ought to start doing breaking news here on the Suitcase.

SuSh 03.11.06

I feel like a million damn dollars tonight. Maybe it's two consecutive days of 80+ degree weather. Maybe it's that Kent State won the MAC tonight, Iowa's in the Big Ten championship, and UW-Milwaukee won the Horizon earlier this week. Thursday I really started feeling horrible. A couple of people from work have sinus infections, and that's exactly what this felt like. However, I feel great now. I can handle a two day sinus infection, compared to every other ones I've had. Now's a good time for a good shuffle:

Current track count: 4615

Opener: Eels - "Theme From Blinking Lights" (Blinking Lights and Other Revelations)

1. Guided By Voices - "Optical Hopscotch" (Do the Collapse)

2. Weezer - "Devotion" (El Scorcho CD-single)

3. Desaparecidos - "What's New for Fall" (What's New for Fall CD-single)

4. Whiskeytown - "If He Can't Have You" (Faithless Street)

5. Golden Smog - "Easy to Be Hard" (On Golden Smog)

6. Lambchop - "There's Still Time" (No, You C'mon)

7. Man or Astro-man? - "Structo (Mr. Microphone Mixup)" (Made From Technetium)

8. Yo La Tengo - "Saturday" (And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out)

9. Elvis Costello - "Tear Off Your Own Head (It's a Doll Revolution)" (When I Was Cruel)

10. Son Volt - "Bandages & Scars" (Omekah and the Melody of Riot)

Holy shit that's a great mix!! Seriously, burn one for yourself. Every song transitioned perfectly. The Eels opener is perfect...well, because it's an opener. "Bandages & Scars" is a great moody closer. Good stuff from Whiskeytown and Golden Smog I hadn't listened to in forever. Even having a random Man or Astro-man? song in the middle of that fit perfectly. Dead serious, that's a great mix. Well done, Mr. mp3.

Loaded

Mom and Dad really came through for me this week. They sent me a box full of the best potato chips in the world, Sterzing's, straight outta Burlington, Iowa!!

I have discovered here in the Mid-Atlantic that the king of chips is Utz's Crab Chips. Damn, damn, damn good chips. Still they are sludge compared to Sterzing's.

Frenzy

I went on a CD shopping frenzy the last two days (with a long night of drinks sandwiched in last night). There's some great stuff here, so let's run things down, shall we?

Cat Power - The Greatest

Cat Power really does kick ass.....but I guess she does it quietly. I'll need to listen to this a little more to really gauge it, but I know that's I bought something great.

Sigur Ros - ( )

Never actually gotten around to getting any Sigur Ros until I saw this disc used yesterday. Always wanted to, but never actually went through. I think this album is a test of patience. Come on, it's over an hour long with only eight untitled songs sung in a nonsense language. All-in-all it's a spectacular album. Not really something to listen to on the way to work, though.

Flaming Lips - 20 Years of Weird

I'm on such a Flaming Lips kick right now, getting geared up for their new release (only a month away!). This disc was released today, although it's kind of the offical release of a bootleg the band gave out at SXSW. It's basically a soundtrack to their documentary, mostly live stuff. I was really fighting hard not to buy this because I figured it'd just be collection filler. However, I'm really glad I did because it's incredible. There's this one song from the movie that I've always wanted ("Enthusiasm For Life Defeats Existential Fear") and I'm very happy that it is on this disc. Plus finally getting to hear the full version of "Sleeping on the Roof" from the parking lot experiments is well-worth the price.

Flaming Lips - The W.A.N.D.

First single from At War With the Mystics. Just the song with two unreleased songs. Nothing overly exciting, but only $3.

Smog - Sewn to the Sky

Smog's debut, found it used. Just an awful mess of an album, but looks damn good in my growing Smog collection. Think Jandek meets Guided By Voices meets me putting the dishes away, then you get the idea.

Smog - Burning Kingdom

Also found this one used. Just an EP, but good nonetheless. Still not his best, but again, it looks great in my collection.

Reverend

Sometimes I hate being a sports fan. Last night, the Rams cut Isaac Bruce. He has been my favorite since Ed McCaffrey retired.

I'm really, really hoping that this post is for not. Maybe the Rams will re-sign him somewhere down the road this off-season. Or maybe he'll retire, but I doubt that. Bruce has really shown the last two years that he's still at the top of his game.

Whatever he does, I'll still cheer him on.

Continuation

I'm making it a point to only use the shuffle function when I'm planning on posting about it (once a week). However last night's list really sucked, plus the shuffle function was still on while to and from work this morning. This time, I got a very nice mix. Check this one out:

1. Mountain Goats - "Old College Try" (Tallahassee)

2. Wilco - "I Must Be High" (A.M.)

3. Beulah - "Burned By the Sun" (The Coast is Never Clear)

4. Guided By Voices - "Buzzards and Dreadful Crows" (Bee Thousand)

5. Iron & Wine - "My Lady's House" (Woman King)

6. Jayhawks - "Take Me With You (When You Go)" (Hollywood Town Hall)

7. Johnny Cash - "The Fourth Man in the Fire" (Unearthed Volume 1)

8. Billy Bragg & Wilco - "Ingrid Bergman" (Mermaid Avenue)

Much, much better. I would definitely buy that album.

SuSh 03.04.06

Very sleepy tonight. Very, very sleepy. Hardly slept the last two days, plus I'm directing every newscast tomorrow. At least it's my Friday tomorrow. Still I thought I'd do a shuffle and post before bed. Here goes:

Current track count: 4572 (I did a little spring cleaning this week)

1. Smog - "Natural Decline" (Rain on Lens)

2. Get Up Kids - "Ten Minutes" (Eudora)

3. Coldplay - "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" (A Rush of Blood to the Head)

4. Lambchop - "The Lone Official" (Aw C'mon)

5. Eisley - "Memories" (Room Noises)

6. Bob Dylan - "Lay Lady Lay" (Nashville Skyline)

7. Magnolia Electric Co. - "The Dark Don't Hide It" (What Comes After the Blues)

8. Beck - "Little One" (Sea Change)

9. James - "Strangers" (Millionaires)

10. Travis - "Somewhere Else" (12 Memories).

What an ecclectic mix!! Maybe not in a good way, though. The first half of this shuffle was terrible! I mean, Smog to the Get Up Kids?? Leave it to Bob to save the day halfway through....with my favorite Dylan song too. Then follow that up with some Jason Molina....excellent!! Still, overall, pretty shitty shuffle. I guess that's why this experiment is fun.

Grade: D+

Funny side note....Berto and I argued once who would be the next James, Travis or Coldplay? On this mix, I got all three.

Off to bed.

Completist

My tax refund has come and gone. Like with most years, a large chunk went towards new CD's (mostly stuff I never got around to getting). This year's purchases:

Airport 5 - Tower in the Fountain of Sparks
Airport 5 - Life Starts Here
Blur - The Great Escape
Guided By Voices - Vampire on Titus
Mountain Goats - The Coroner's Gambit

Throw in a new cardigan, some new jeans, and a portion into savings, and it's all gone.

That's a lot of music to keep me occupied, but I still wanted to pick up something new. It was between the new Cat Power and Jenny Lewis' solo debut. After I saw Lewis' video on Subterranean Sunday night, it was settled.

I'll admit that I came had a bit of negative bias towards this album before I picked it up. I like Jenny Lewis/Rilo Kiley, but I'm not a big fan. Sorry hipsters. It's something that I listen to occasionally, but not with a great deal of confidence. When I heard about this album's country concept, I was very sceptical. I've heard Jenny try out some country sounds with Rilo Kiley with very unsatisfactory results. Then I saw that she covers the Traveling Wilburys' "Handle With Care" with Ben Gibbard as Roy Orbison, M. Ward as Jeff Lynne, and Conor Oberst as Bob Dylan. Oh boy, this album was definitely heading towards gimmick-land. Not good.

Still "Rise Up With Fists!!" was a hell of a song when I saw the video.

Likewise, the rest of the album follows suit. It's pretty damn good! Not as forced as I figured. There are still those moments when Jenny tries a little too hard to be Linda Ronstadt or something, but it doesn't get in the way of the finished product. Even "Handle With Care" is great! It just feels great to hear this stuff. Easily better than any Rilo Kiley releases. Not spectacular, but my prejudgement was definitely inaccurate.
