Moved In

Okay, I'm all moved in here at Virginia Beach. My apartment is totally badass. This area of town is killer. Life is all good right now.

Tomorrow is when I start the new job. I'm a little nervous, I'll admit. It'll be weird going in as a manager of people I don't know. At least I'll be well-rested. I've spent the last three days going to bed whenever I'm tired, and waking up whenever I'm awake. It's been very nice. Molly and I have just been exploring the neighborhood. Lots of shopping. That's good. Today we're planning on heading over to the beach. We're around ten minutes from the shore, may as well take advantage of it.

The problem I have right now is that I am broke. Moving is so ridiculously expensive. It'll take some time to refuel. We were planning on seeing the Shins last night at the Norva, but decided to keep the money. Sucks because that would've been a killer show. I did get the new Most Serene Republic my last day in Richmond. Funny, I think the last album I bought before I left Kirksville was their previous album.

Gotta get going. Got a lot of laying around to do today! Relax for one more day. Back to reality tomorrow.

Getting Closer

A week from today is my last day in Richmond. I'm very excited, but mostly to get it over with. Next Friday is going to be awesome. I'll be all moved in and can just relax for the weekend.

In the meantime, this moving stuff really sucks. This is my third move in a little over two years. However, everything is coming together nicely. Everything is set up and ready to go. All that's left is packing, packing, packing. Friday we are heading over to Virginia Beach to get the new place. We're taking a load over that night, just so it's not all at once. We'll head back over on Monday with another load. I'm just excited to get the place. I still haven't seen it in person, just pictures online. Still it looks pretty badass.

The other thing that sucks about moving is that it is so ridiculously expensive. I just resigned my lease here this summer. Now I have to buy my way out of it. Plus there's the whole security deposit, paying a month's rent at two apartments, renter's insurance, blah, blah, blah. I'm happy I haven't had to dip into my saving account yet, but I'm about as close as it gets.

I've been penny-pinching hardcore this week. I want new music!! I already skipped last week's releases of the new Most Serene Republic and Cake's b-sides collection. I wrote about this week's awesome releases, all of which I've skipped out on so far. I think I may buy one new album this week, you know, as a soundtrack for moving, or something. I know what my first chore will be when I get to Virginia Beach..... find an indie music store.

Moving Again

In case you hadn't heard, last week I accepted a new job as Production Manager in Norfolk, Va. It's a pretty big step.... back into management and a 17 market bump.

Now it's off to the whole moving thing, which I HATE!! The good thing is that Norfolk is only about 90 minutes from here. We spent all weekend apartment hunting. It's considerably more expensive in that part of Virginia, but I'll be making considerably more money so it'll balance out in my favor.

Today it looks like we've found our place. It's a nice place in central Virginia Beach, about 15 minutes from work and 10 minutes from the beach. It's way more expensive than my current place, but within my budget. It got killer reviews, so it should be nice.

Hopefully it'll just be a temporary move. Molly and I are planning on saving up a bunch over the next year then looking at buying a place. Big step, but this is the first time in my life I'll be able to buy something. It'd be pretty stupid to not look at buying. I know squat about buying a house, but I'll have a year to study.

I'm planning on steadily moving over there. I've got three trips on the schedule, so it should be cake to move little-by-little.

Sorry in advance if I'm a little out of touch over the next couple of weeks, but it shouldn't be too bad. My last day of work here is Oct. 17. My first day there is Oct. 22. I'm excited!!

Andrew Bird

Molly and I saw Andrew Bird at the brand new Toad's Place in downtown Richmond.

First off, this was my first trip to Toad's Place since it opened in June. I was very impressed. The building is beautiful. It's just very Richmond..... old warehouse turned state-of-the-art. It was way bigger than I expected. Everything sounded great. Just a great experience.... a venue that Richmond was desperately needing.
Now for Andrew Bird, this was one tremendous show. I'd read for a while how impressive his shows are, and I was not disappointed. The use of live samples was just disorienting and beautiful. I didn't think a song like "Plasticities" could be improved, but he turned a killer song into a religious experience.
It was also nice to hear him play a bit of "Dr. Stringz" as an intro to "Fake Palindromes" (another of my favorites). In fact, he pretty much played all of my favorite songs. If he played "First Song," then that would seal the deal. Still, one unreal show.
